From a caption for the drawing , ‘8B-B/H - 8H’, in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum: ‘Maria Lalic’s 1992 drawing ‘8B-B/H -8H’ is a minimalist tabulation of the various pencil grades, from the palest silvery grey of 8H to the near-black of 8B.’ Since 1977 Maria Lalic has worked with all 19 grades of the Faber-Castell pencil range, 8B - 10H, making drawings on paper exploiting the almost translucent silver-grey of 10H to the intense, velvety blackness of 8B. In all the drawings maximum pressure is exerted on each pencil grade using the most fundamental attributes of drawing and try to expand as imaginatively as possible within these parameters, what the act of drawing can be at its most elemental - pencil on paper, the hand, the line.
